When you don’t want to have to rely on highly noticeable metal braces to straighten your teeth, Invisalign can be a great alternative. Bear in mind, though, that the success of your Invisalign treatment depends largely on your ability to take proper care of your aligners. To make sure that the Invisalign process stays on track, make sure that you always keep these 4 dos and don’ts in mind.

1. Do Always Clean Your Teeth Before Wearing Your Aligners

Since Invisalign is removable, you will have the freedom to enjoy all your favorite foods. But once your meal or snack is over, you shouldn’t put your aligners back in your mouth right away. Instead, you should take the time to brush and floss thoroughly in order to get rid of any food debris or harmful bacteria that may be lingering in your mouth. That way, you can keep your risk for tooth decay and gum disease to a minimum.

2. Do Soak Your Aligners Every Day

Your aligners will sit in your mouth for most of the day, so it’s important to clean them thoroughly to get rid of any plaque that may have accumulated on them. It’s highly recommended that you place your aligners in a soaking solution on a daily basis. Once they’re done soaking, you can brush them gently before putting them back on your teeth.

3. Don’t Eat or Drink Anything While Wearing Your Aligners

Trying to chew anything with your aligners could end up seriously damaging them. On top of that, the plastic that your aligners are made out of could become discolored if they’re exposed to certain beverages. To keep your aligners in the best possible shape, you should not eat or drink anything besides water while wearing them.

4. Don’t Leave Your Aligners Lying Out Unprotected

When you take your aligners out for any length of time, the first thing you should do is put them in their protective case. Leaving your aligners out in the open is a bad idea; they could easily be exposed to harmful bacteria, and they might become lost or damaged if you’re not careful. You should always make sure that you have a safe place to put your aligners, so keep their case with you at all times.

Your dentist will have a few other tips for taking proper care of your aligners. Be sure to follow any instructions you’re given to the letter; it’s critical to do everything you can to make sure your Invisalign treatment is a success.
