When is a tooth beyond saving?

At Darren G. Koch, D.D.S., our goal is to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime, so we recommend a routine visit every six months. These preventive visits allow us to remove plaque and tartar and address any problems before they become more serious and costly.

But even with diligent oral hygiene and regular visits, there are times when a tooth is beyond saving.

Can Your Tooth Be Saved?

We’ll do whatever we can to save your natural teeth, but here are some scenarios when that may not be possible:

  • Structural loss — If your tooth has extensive decay or is severely broken, there may not be enough healthy tooth structure to hold a filling or crown.
  • Fractured roots — When your tooth has a deep vertical crack or broken roots below the gumline, an extraction may be your only option.
  • Bone loss — Severe periodontal disease can deteriorate your jawbone, loosening one or more teeth. Without sufficient jawbone support, your teeth can’t stay in place.
