Does IPR hurt?

Clear aligner therapy is a popular way to discreetly and comfortably straighten your teeth without the need for traditional braces. But when your teeth are crowded and need more space during Invisalign® treatment, you may need Interproximal Reduction as part of your treatment plan.

Let’s learn more about IPR and its role in your orthodontic care.

What Is IPR?

IPR, or Interproximal Reduction, is a safe and painless dental procedure that removes small amounts of enamel between your teeth, correcting crowding issues and allowing your teeth to shift.

Although IPR isn’t always needed in conjunction with Invisalign treatment, it can often reduce crowding, create the necessary space, and help you avoid extraction.

The IPR Procedure: What to Expect

  • We start by evaluating your tooth thickness and identifying any areas that need IPR.
  • Then, we isolate the areas and use a small dental tool to break the contact point between your teeth.
  • Next, using abrasive strips, we remove a small amount of tooth enamel before shaping and polishing your tooth’s surface.
  • We’ll measure the area to ensure it matches your treatment plan and apply fluoride to reduce any sensitivity.

That’s it!
