Why the “Use It or Lose It” Deadline is Non-Negotiable
Most dental insurance requires you to “use” your benefits before you “lose” them, meaning that if you have any unused benefits at the end of the calendar year (December 31), those benefits don’t roll over to the next year.
And the amount you pay each month (your premium) is usually subject to certain conditions, including the following:
- Maximum allowance — This dollar amount is the most your insurance will pay in any given year for covered dental treatments.
- Deductible — This is the amount you are responsible for before your insurance begins to pay part or all of your treatment costs.
Smart Ways to Maximize Your Remaining 2025 Dollars
There are some things you can do to get the most out of your coverage:
- Schedule preventive visits if it has been more than six months since your last visit. Most dental insurance pays 100% for checkups, cleanings, exams, x-rays, and minor fillings, and these services are not part of your deductible.
- Strategically plan major treatments, such as dental crowns or implants. You can begin treatment in 2025 and complete treatment in 2026, taking advantage of your maximum allowance for both years.
