TOOTH DECAY:

Cavities, also called tooth decay or caries, are caused by a combination of factors, including: not brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, eating foods that are high in sugar, drinking acidic beverages such as soft drinks, and failing to seek professional dental care.

1. DENTAL ANATOMY:

Teeth consist of 3 layers - enamel, dentin & pulp.

2. DEMINERALIZATION / ENAMEL DECAY:

When oral bacteria consume sugars, they produce acidic waste products that cause tooth demineralization. If the demineralization process is not treated, it produces a weak spot in the tooth’s surface that becomes enamel decay.

3. DENTIN DECAY:

As a tooth is exposed to repeated acid attack over time, decay will progress through the enamel into the inner layer of the tooth called the dentin. At this stage, remineralization is no longer possible and the decay begins to spread more rapidly.

Untreated dentin decay will eventually progress into the nerve, resulting in an infection.
